Animal welfare is an important issue for us. That is why we are particularly concerned to work together with animal protection associations and thus to make our guidelines transparent.
In the first step we have found an agreement with the Bundesverband Tierschutz e.V. (Federal Association for Animal Protection). Our goal is to prohibit the killing of male chicks. This involves a lot of effort and costs, but the rearing and utilisation of male animals are clear guidelines of the Bio-Initiative.
The Bio-Initiative concludes participation contracts with the affiliated companies, whereby the trademark, the use of which is licensed, represents the seal of the Federal Association of Animal Protection to be used. Within the framework of this user agreement, farms are obliged to comply with the system requirements, so that animal protection standards become obligatory for those farms that want to appear with the statement "confirmed by animal protection".
The existing mark of the Federal Association for the Protection of Animals is supplemented by the statement "confirmed by animal protection" and registered as a word mark at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office. The mark may not be used for additional licensing without agreement with the Federal Association for the Protection of Animals.
The audits and certification in the plants are carried out in three stages according to the system specifications of the Bio-initiative:
1. the legally required eco-certification
2 The KAT audit as additional control and verification
3. monitoring the requirements of the Bio-Initiative.
The Federal Association for Animal Protection and/or the Bio-Initiative will train the testing institutes to be involved accordingly and familiarise them with the content of the guide.
In addition to the three-stage audits, the Federal Association of Animal Welfare is entitled to carry out its own unannounced inspections on the farms at any time. For this purpose, all documents relevant to the audit must be made available to the auditor.
