The requirements of the EU regulations on organic production and labelling of organic products form the basis for the newly founded non-profit Bio-Initiative GmbH. The standards of the initiative also apply to areas which are not or only partially described in the provisions of the EU specifications. The aim is a standard that covers the interests of producers of organically produced products for differentiation from competitors as well as the wishes of consumers with regard to environmental protection and animal health.
The development of specifications and a clear positioning for the implementation in practice plays a decisive role. They are the main component and heart of an ecologically oriented system in the interest of market participants and consumers.
In designing these requirements, the provisions of Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 on organic production and the labelling and control of organic products and its implementing rules are laid down in Commission Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 and its amendments. The provisions in the current version and supplements shall apply. This includes clear specifications and defined test systems, which are checked and evaluated by independent external controls. Exceptions to the standards are not granted, this applies in particular to stocking densities that are based on the requirements of a purely area-related size.
